Transcript: Additional Thoughts: What if the parent threatens to withdraw their child from your class in protest? What if the parent becomes belligerent on the topic? What if the parent threatens to go to the media? A male student approaches you in private and reveals to you that they are gay. They are concerned with suffering harassment from their friends and fellow students if this fact is revealed. How do you handle the situation? A parent contacts you after a lesson on diversity, inclusion, and homosexuality and demands to know why you are "promoting homosexuality to their child". What really matters is how you handle yourself dealing with these issues. Conclusion If you want to know more, we have additional resources that might be valuable to you! We will now be breaking into a number of small discussion groups. A series of scenarios will be presented for you to discuss. Try to come to a collective agreement on how best to handle each situation. One member from each group will quickly describe their solution. There are resources available for you, your students, and their parents to help tackle these issues Groups such as Gay-Straight Alliance groups have been shown to have huge impacts on these issues. Join up and help out in your school if you can. Let students know that you are a safe and confidential option to speak to. Know your schools policy on LGBT issues. If it is inadequate, speak up! Know your rights and responsibilities as well as those of the administration. Do not accept inactivity on these issues. And now a challenge: Responding to Homophobia in High Schools, Halton District School Board, Halton, Ontario http://www.hdsb.ca/Programs/Documents/SAIS-Responding%20to%20Homophobia%20in%20High%20Schools.pdf The Critical Points: Additional Thoughts: If the situation was private, would you react differently? If you do intervene, how do you proceed if the student simply comes back with "Whatever..." Scenario 2: Questions? Concerns? Did we miss anything? A Queer Day in Canada: Examining Canadian High School Students’ Experiences With School-Based Homophobia in Two Large-Scale Studies Tracey Peter, Catherine Taylor, Line Chamberland Journal of Homosexuality Additional Thoughts: Would your response be any different if it was a girl? A racial minority? What if they feel they identify as a different gender? How would things be different if they wanted to come out themselves? Scenario 3: LGBTQT Students suffer a disproportionate levels of harassment and abuse Not solely a LGBTQT issue, but also a student safety issue How mainstream language, not just insults, is harmful The Statistics Involved: While walking down the halls of the school, you hear a number of students engaged in conversation frustrated about something and one announces “That’s so fucking gay!” in earshot of many other students. As a teacher, how do you react to this? Issues and Perspectives on Sexual Identity and Orientation Teacher Daniel Mark Ogloff suspended for homophobic prank, CBC Canada http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/teacher-daniel-mark-ogloff-suspended-for-homophobic-prank-1.2777023 (We really do want to know) And now the wider impact! A Troubling Perspective... For each group: What was your final solution to the challenge presented? Did any of the alternative points make a big difference in how you would have handled the situation? For everyone else: Do you have any questions or concerns over their strategy? Mark Roth and James Gibson Scenario 1: Thank you! References

Transcript: -Health classes educate mostly on hetero and cis sex issues, but are less inclusive towards LGBT+ youth, especially transgender students. If people become educated on correct terminology, LGBT+ issues, and respectful conduct, these problems can lessen and hopefully one day vanish!!! LGBT+ ISSUES & ADVOCACY -It's a diverse community that can admittedly become somewhat confusing. -Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership. Through school health classes Issues for lgbt+ youth There are many ways to educate people which include... THESE ARE NOT THE ONLY TERMS LGBT+ safe spaces -There are many other different terms in the LGBT+ community such as genderqueer, agender, skoliosexual, 2 spirited, genderfluid etc. -Studies show that schools that promote LGBT+ safety and educate students on the LGBT+ community have an improved academic success rate for not only LGBT+ students, but other students as well. -Health classes should educate students about the different terms and labels used within the LGBT+ community, which include sex and gender. HISTORICAL ALTERNATIVE -Another way is through history! -The LGBT+ movement is rich in history and struggles that are ignored in American history. -The LGBT+ movement should be integrated into history classes because it is a vital part of American history. -If the history of the LGBT+ community is talked about, LGBT+ students will feel safer, happier, and non LGBT+ students will be more accepting and tolerable of the diversity within their peers. THANK YOU EDUCATION Ex: "When women breast feed..." is wrong. "When people breast feed..." is more trans inclusive because it excludes gender, and can not offend anyone. Whether intentional or not, Microagressions are seen in everyday life that cause harm to many minority groups. -Teachers should learn to identify and refrain from using microagressions to ensure the health and happiness of their students. -Educators should teach about the difference between sex and gender, intersex people and the process doctors go through to decide a child's gender, correct terminology, and mental health issues in relation to the LGBT+ community. -Use THEY/THEM pronouns when referring to students of unspecified genders. -These issues are important to me and many other people. Taking action will provide the safety and happiness of LGBT+ youth and other students, and ensure the future is bright with safety and opportunity for everyone! Ex: -There could be controversy in integrating LGBT+ education in health and history classes, so a safer alternative is an LGBT HISTORY/HEALTH ELECTIVE COURSE. -Teachers that are educated on the LGBT+ community are valuable allies to their LGBT+ students and make them feel a lot safer. "I have a gay best friend..." This is wrong because the fact that they are gay has nothing to do with the fact they are your best friend, you're making their sexual orientation their whole identity which makes LGBT+ members upset. Microaggressions... boo!!! -40% of homeless youth identify as LGBT+. -LGBT+ youth are 4 times more likely to commit or attempt suicide than their straight peers. -This is due to many factors which include: Physical/Emotional/Sexual abuse in homes or other places. -Bullying from students/staff in school systems. -Lack of acceptance from family. -Homosexual: attracted to same sex or gender. -Bisexual: Attracted to two differing genders. -Pansexual: attracted to anyone regardless of gender. -Asexual: Unable to experience sexual attraction(or very little.) -Cisgender: someone who aligns with the gender assigned at birth. -Transgender: an individual who does not identify with the gender assigned at birth. -Intersex- An individual with two sets of genitalia or various chromosomal differences More alternatives... -Since it is an elective, students will have the CHOICE to take this class and educate themseves. -This class could cover a multitude of topics such as the LGBT+ movement, binding, bandaging, tucking, mental health issues that predominantly effect LGBT+ community, sex safety and extensive LGBT+ terminology. -Since it is an elective, the students that take this class are probably interested in this course, and could prove to be POPULAR in many schools. -Safe spaces refer to locations, usually in schools where LGBT+ students are able to speak to confidentially speak to either staff or other students comfortably regarding their issues. -Many schools have many safe spaces (usually in guidance offices, grade offices etc.) but not many students know about them because they go unnoticed. -Usually a small sticker indicates of an -LGBT+ safe zone... highly unnoticeable. To better Use trans inclusive terminology: THE PROBLEM IS THAT MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THESE ISSUES HAVE A SIMPLE SOLUTION. LGBT+ SAFE

Transcript: 1. We posted on our group social media daily trying to reach groups that had a common goal with us. We found out that when we did reach out to these groups, our viewership went up. 2. When we passed out notecards with our social media platforms and our website links, our viewership was expected to go up, but didn't. 3. When we posted on our personal social medias (Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr), asking others to follow our group accounts/check our website, viewership went up exceptionally. Gay Why does this matter? Lesbian The Issue: - Seeing beyond society's status quo and coming together as one with a common goal. - There are no limitations when it comes to art and music. Art is an international language for social protest. One commonality that we all have is music. Bisexual Impact: suicideinlgbtcommunities.weebly.com Our website: We plan to make more advances with our website and our social media platforms. By doing this we plan to advance our knowledge by doing: Going to lgbt parades/rallies Educate parents about the issue by holding information nights/seminars Start a support group for those who have attempted suicide or for people who have lost someone because of suicide - We believe that no one should be put down for who they want to love or become. - "Its such a shame that people aren't accepted for who they are. Love is a human experience - not a political statement. You don't have to be gay to be a supporter, you just have to be human. If anybody can find someone to love them in this world, then I fully support that in any shape or form," (Selena Carrasco). Why we care? Tweets: In the article Leelah's mother Carla stated, "We don't support that, religiously," ... What Leelah Alcorn then wrote in her suicide note was, "My death needs to be counted in the number of transgender people who commit suicide this year. I want someone to look at that number and say “that’s fucked up” and fix it. Fix society. Please." It describes ones sexual orientation or how they identify themselves. Suicide in LGBT Communities Our Social Media Platforms: Plans For the future: Videos Thousands of teens are committing suicide because they're not accepted for their sexual orientation. They'd rather be dead, than face the people who make them feel horrible about themselves. Sources "Kids React to Gay Marriage." YouTube. YouTube. Web. 4 Feb. 2015. " Love Is Love." Youtube. Youtube. Web. 4 Feb. 2015 Final Thoughts What is LGBT? Pictures Suicide in LGBT is something major in the teenage media. Teens get judged because of their sexual orientation. Because they are not heterosexual, they get bullied and they can't take it anymore and they have no way to debrief. With no way out they result in self-harming or even worse suicide.
