Silly Putty Presentation

Transcript: The Creation 1. I noticed that when you press the putty flat against a newspaper, it imprints the words of the paper on the putty in mirror writing. 2. It is easily stretched or pulled apart, but can be put back together when moved together 3. When rolled into a sphere, it bounces Silly Putty has hydrogen bonds between the molecules of Silly Putty. The hydrogen atoms are easily broken, so when stress is applied the hydrogen atoms break and the putty flows. Adding more pressure causes the bonds to break or tear. by Salem Gordon In 1943, engineer James Wright created what would be known later as "Silly Putty", as an attempt to make synthetic rubber when rubber became low during WW2. He created it by mixing together boric acid and silicone in a test tube. His efforts failed, however, and he set the creation aside, deeming it a failure. Silly Putty Presentation Silly Putty can also be used as a grip strengthener and as an art medium. Silly Putty went up on the Apollo 8 mission Other Uses Peter Hodgson realized Silly Putty's potential and in 1950, Silly Putty becomes a big hit in toy stores and becomes the signature toy we all know today. Why it works I got most of my information off of these sites: 1.)http://www2.crayola.com/mediacenter/index.cfm?display=press_release&news_id=164 2.) http://people.howstuffworks.com/silly-putty3.htm 3. ) http://www.chem.umn.edu/outreach/Sillyputty.html Silly Putty becomes a toy Sites I Used Observations Silly Putty: The History A few years later, the toy was circulating around different engineers, Wright hoping to find a practical use for the item. Silly Putty

Transcript: Fun to play with! Not to eat!(: Silly Putty! By: Angelise and Nicole Mrs Taylor P.3 Hypothesis We think that if we use more borax than glue, it will be less tight and not bounce as high. Procedures First, we prepared the 50% glue solution , which is made up of one cup of glue and one cup of water, we placed it into one jar. Second, close jar tightly and shake jar until glue is fully diluted and no gooey clumps remain. Then label jar "50% glue". Third, make the borax solution, which is made of 2 tsp. of borax and 1 cup of warm water. We placed it into the other jar and did as step two described instead of labeling it "50% glue", we labeled it " 4% borax". Forth, we added 1 Tbsp. of 50% glue solution and 3 Tbsp. of 4% borax solution into one baggy. We did this with everyone of our test with different amounts of solutions. Fifth, add an even amount of food coloring into every baggy. Seal the baggy and using your fingers mix the ingredients together. Finally, make a data table and write down observations of each mixture. When the mixture begins to form a sticky glob, take it out of the baggy. Write down on your data table its physical property's. Control Baggy Water Independent Variable Our independent variable is the amount of borax and glue. Dependent Variable Our dependent variable is the glue and borax. Analysis Our data shows that the more glue you use the stickier it will be. Life application Silly putty can affect our life,a child playing with it and accidentally swallowing it could be dangerous.
